Walk from the Paramount box office at 23 E. Galena to the RiverEdge Park gate at 360 N. Broadway and you cover about four blocks. In that stretch you now pass at least six restaurants that did not exist five years ago, a new casino event center that opened its doors this summer, and a monthly art walk that the City took over on January 1. If you have lived in Aurora for a while, that geography matters. The pieces used to sit apart. They no longer do.
The thesis, stated plainly
Downtown Aurora has quietly reached a walkable critical mass. A resident can plan a Friday-through-Sunday around Stolp Island, the river, and Galena Boulevard without driving to Naperville or the city, and the calendar between mid-August and early October is where that shift is most visible.
The arts institutions were always here. The restaurant density and the second event venue are what changed.
The rest of this post is a working plan for the next several weekends, organized the way a local would actually use it.
What is on the calendar right now
The Paramount's 15th Broadway Series opens with Mean Girls, running August 26 through October 11 at 23 E. Galena Boulevard, followed by a newly reimagined A Christmas Carol from November 11 through January 3, 2027. Artistic Director Jim Corti's announcement described the season as spanning "Tina Fey to Charles Dickens to Sondheim to Andrew Lloyd Webber," and single tickets went on sale in mid-June. If you have not renewed a subscription in a while, note that free exchanges into any performance of equal or lesser value are allowed up to one hour before showtime, which is more flexible than most regional houses.
Two blocks north at RiverEdge Park, the August and September lineup runs across several genres:

RiverEdge holds up to 8,500, with reserved orchestra seating in front of the stage and a general admission lawn behind it. It sits along the Fox River shoreline, which is the practical reason most locals arrive early with a light dinner from a downtown restaurant rather than eating on the lawn.
Where to eat before or after
Downtown Aurora's dining scene is the part that has changed fastest, and it is what makes the Paramount-to-RiverEdge walk feel different from five years ago. Rather than a ranked list, here is the current map by concept and address, all inside the walkable core:

O&D Hospitality's owners, Megan and Chris Curren, told the Daily Herald that Aurora "felt right" as their second location, and their track record with The Graceful Ordinary in downtown St. Charles is worth knowing when you are deciding whether Vicolo is worth a first visit. Kai Japanese Kitchen replaced Leilani Asian Fusion after Leilani closed in July 2025; signage went up this past March and construction has been ongoing inside, which means you may find soft-opening menus rather than a locked lineup on your first visit.
If you want the older institutions instead, they are still doing what they have always done:
- Wurst Kitchen, operating since 1895, still makes more than 80 varieties of handmade sausages and smoked meats
- Jake's Bagels & Deli, family-owned since 1990, sits within a short walk of the Fox River Trail and the Metra station
- Don Walker's Sandwich Center continues to serve Italian beef from a no-frills downtown counter
The point of listing both is not comparison. It is that a Friday plan can now include a 90-year-old sausage shop and a two-year-old French Creole kitchen without a car in between.
The new node: Hollywood Casino Aurora
The biggest structural change on the map is Hollywood Casino Aurora's new resort at Farnsworth, which opened this summer with a full gaming floor, a spa, an on-site hotel, and an event center. Multi-platinum rockers X Ambassadors headlined the first show at the event center, and the venue is being programmed as an arena-style room at intimate scale. For residents, the practical effect is that Aurora now has three distinct live-music rooms of different sizes: RiverEdge outdoors at 8,500, the Paramount at roughly 1,800, and The Venue on Downer Place at 200 seats with an outdoor stage in fair weather. Three tiers, one downtown.
First Fridays, and one thing that changed
First Fridays has been the connective tissue of downtown for years, running the first Friday evening of every month with art openings, live music, and pop-ups across galleries, restaurants, and shops. What changed on January 1, 2026 is who runs it. The City of Aurora took over event management from the Aurora Downtown District, which is in the process of reorganizing as a new nonprofit expected to take the event back mid-year. There is no First Fridays event in July, so the next one is August, and businesses had to submit for the printed map by late June. Practically speaking, expect a slightly different footprint of participating venues this month than last summer.
The event traces back to 2013, when The ArtBar at Two Brothers Roundhouse anchored the first collective art walk after the older Aurora ArtWalk wound down in 2012. That history matters because First Fridays is not a marketing invention. It grew out of a specific room in a specific building, and the roster of participating galleries still reflects that lineage.
A walkable weekend, sketched
Here is one way the geography works in practice:
- Friday evening: First Fridays gallery hop along Stolp Island and Water Street Mall, dinner at Amore Mio or Touché, late drink at ARTHOUSE
- Saturday afternoon: SciTech Hands-On Museum with kids or the Fox River Trail on foot or bike, coffee and a pastry at Vicolo
- Saturday night: RiverEdge for whichever show fits (Totally Tubular on 8/16 draws a very different crowd than Gov't Mule on 8/13), then a nightcap at The Venue if a late set is scheduled
- Sunday: Brunch at Jake's Bagels, walk to Wilder Park, matinee at the Paramount
You do not need every piece of that plan. The point is that all of it now sits inside roughly one square mile.
For someone who has lived here a while
If your read on downtown Aurora is a few years old, the update is worth internalizing. The Paramount draws 350,000 patrons a year from more than 250 communities, and more than 40,000 of those are Broadway Series subscribers, according to the City of Aurora. Those numbers were true before the restaurant density arrived. They are what the new restaurants are betting on. The Currens chose Aurora for their second concept for that reason, not the other way around.
For homeowners, the quiet takeaway is that the amenity map inside walking distance of a downtown address is broader this year than last, and broader last year than the year before. That is the sort of neighborhood change that shows up in listing photos and buyer questions long before it shows up in averages.
